Where the Heat Was

A Malawian truck driver in a long brown work coat stands side-on beside an old truck, one hand resting flat on its bright red bonnet, in a pale cold grey field between stepped black-green panels.

I keep my hand where the warmth used to be.

The bonnet is cold under my hand. It hasn’t been warm for days.

In mid-October 2026, Malawi launched a nationwide crackdown on fuel hoarders and black-market sellers. Diesel and petrol had been scarce for weeks because the country lacked the hard currency to buy them, leaving truckers queuing for up to a week and bus fares doubling on some routes.

Ahead of me, the line hasn’t moved since last night. My hand stays where the engine’s heat used to be.
