Wired Time

A schoolgirl in Butebo, Uganda, in a plain school dress stands seen from behind, looking at a small school building with one lit saffron window, in a field fading from charcoal to earth brown between stepped pale ash panels.

It was wired for years. Today it answers.

Where the Heat Was

A Malawian truck driver in a long brown work coat stands side-on beside an old truck, one hand resting flat on its bright red bonnet, in a pale cold grey field between stepped black-green panels.

I keep my hand where the warmth used to be.

Half a Turn

A South Sudanese woman wrapped in a long slate-grey cloth and headscarf sits on the ground with her knees drawn up, her thumb on the dial of a small bright yellow radio, in a field fading from charcoal to pale ash between stepped red-earth panels.

Every voice on it is sure. I’m the only one who isn’t.
