Her Hands Go First

In a sandstone room lit by a small window, an elderly woman in a dark shawl fastens a gold pin on the oxblood, maize-patterned Basotho blanket around her grandson’s shoulders while he looks down at her hands.

I could fasten it myself. I let her.

Her hands find the pin before mine do. She wraps the blanket over my work jacket, presses the clasp closed at my shoulder, and looks up to check that it holds.

On October 4, 2026, Lesotho marked sixty years of independence at Setsoto Stadium in Maseru. Welcoming Eswatini’s King Mswati III, King Letsie III spoke of the two kingdoms: “These bonds transcend the formal relations between two sovereign states. They are rooted in a shared heritage and strengthened over generations through mutual respect, solidarity and close people-to-people connections.”

She smooths the wool once more. I stand still and let her hands finish.
